From the archives...

Scrounging through some old slides and came upon this diptych. Inspired by Rembrandt's Night Watch and various Italian Piétas of the Renaissance, and measuring 14 by 8 feet in total (oil and tar on canvas), this ambitious painting that I started in my second year in art school (1992-93? (yikes!)) was never fully realized and after around 15 or so years in storage was in such bad condition (the tar had eventually ate and seeped through the canvas) that I decided to unceremoniously destroy it by knifing the shit out of it. That cathartic act of creating and destroying something became a valuable lesson: don't hold onto something that will eventually eat away at itself... & god dang if I ever decide to work that big or with tar again.
